Sheffield Medicals RUFC are an amateur rugby club founded by students at the university in 1964. The club is made up of current students at The University of Sheffield and is one of the largest sports teams at the university.
SMRUFC field 3 teams every weekend playing in the Yorkshire leagues and have enjoyed previously unparalleled success in recent years, with more members competing at a higher standard of rugby than ever before. In the coming years it is our aim to establish a permanent 4th team to grow the club further.
The 1st XV are currently playing in Yorkshire 2 (Level 8), the 2nd XV play in the Yorkshire Merit League and the 3rd XV play every weekend in the South Yorkshire Merit League. It is our 3rd XV that compete against other society teams such as History and Engineering demonstrating the comparative strength and dominance of the Medical School on the Rugby at Sheffield University.
We usually enter a mixed 1st and 2nd team into the NAMS tournament in the early rounds and a full 1st XV in the knockout stages.
Sheffield Medicals host weekly socials alongside a handful of larger events. Our esteemed Alumni return to Sheffield each year for a our Old Boys match and Dinner and we also embark on an overseas tour every other year!
Last season was a particularly successful year for Sheffield Medicals winning the National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) Cup after overcoming previous champions Southampton in the final and narrowly missing out on promotion into Yorkshire 1.
